Timing Belt

Timing belt replacement is the job that every VAG owner knows they should stay on top of and plenty don't right up until the moment they wish they had. The timing belt keeps your engine's internals in sync. When it goes, and it will go if you leave it long enough, the results are not pretty: bent valves and damaged pistons, not to mention a repair bill that makes the cost of a belt change look like a rounding error. The good news is it's entirely preventable. Book it in with the experts at Awesome GTI before the interval, not after.

Timing Belt or Timing Chain: What Has My Car Got?

Not all VAG engines use a timing belt. Some run a timing chain instead, which is generally considered a longer-lasting setup but is not maintenance-free either. Chains stretch over time and tensioners wear, and a failing timing chain has the same appetite for engine destruction as a snapped belt.

If you're not sure whether your car has a belt or a chain, give us a call with your registration and we'll tell you straight away. We'll also let you know what the recommended change interval is for your specific engine so there's no guesswork involved.

Timing Belt Replacement and Cambelt Change in Manchester

We're VAG specialists based in Irlam, Manchester and have been doing this since 1989. When we carry out a timing belt replacement, the belt is only part of the story. Everything driven by it wears at the same rate, and leaving worn components behind when the belt is already off is a decision you'll regret. Skipping them to save a few quid now almost always means paying more later when something fails and the whole job has to come apart again. If your car is also due a full service we can take care of both in the same visit.

Pricing is on application as it varies by engine. Ring us on 0161 776 0777 and we'll give you a straight quote for your car. We can use ODIS diagnostics to check the full health of the car at the same time if you want a proper picture of where everything is at.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much is a cambelt change?

It depends on the engine. Some are relatively straightforward, others are a proper afternoon's work. As a general rule, anything that involves removing ancillary components to get access will cost more in labour. We price on application so give us a ring on 0161 776 0777 with your reg and we'll give you an accurate quote rather than a number pulled from thin air.

When should I change my cambelt?

Most VAG engines have a mileage-based interval, a time-based interval, or both, whichever comes first. The time-based element catches people out most often. A car that hasn't done many miles but is several years old still needs the belt changed because rubber degrades with age regardless of how far it's travelled. If you bought a used car and you're not sure when the belt was last done, treat it as overdue until you can prove otherwise.

How often should a cambelt be changed?

It varies by engine but a rough guide for most VAG applications is every 5 years or 60,000 to 80,000 miles, whichever comes first. Some engines are more demanding than that. If your car has been remapped or is used hard, staying at the shorter end of the interval is the smarter call. An engine that's making more power is putting more load through the belt, and more load means more wear.

What happens if a timing belt snaps?

On most VAG engines, nothing good. The majority are interference engines, which means the valves and pistons occupy the same space at different points in the cycle. The timing belt is what keeps them from meeting at the wrong moment. When it snaps, they do. The result is typically bent valves at minimum and potentially a lot worse depending on engine speed at the time. It is the kind of repair that prompts serious conversations about whether to fix the car or replace it. A belt change is considerably cheaper than that conversation.
