Brake Disk Skimming
Brake disc skimming is the method most car manufacturers actually recommend for sorting brake vibration properly, and it's something we've been doing here at Awesome since 1989. If your car's been shaking under braking, chances are someone's already told you the discs need replacing. They might be wrong. Skimming the disc on the car means it gets machined true to the exact flange it runs on, which is the bit that actually causes the vibration in the first place.

Why On-Car Skimming Works Better Than Replacing the Discs
Even brand new discs can cause vibration if there's run-out in the drive flange they're bolted to. Fit a shiny new disc to a flange that's slightly out of true and you've spent money to end up in the same spot. On-car skimming removes that variable entirely, as the disc gets machined perfectly parallel to the flange it runs on.
Run-out and disc thickness variation are behind most brake complaints. Both produce that familiar judder through the pedal or wheel, and both can be sorted in about an hour per corner without reaching for a full disc replacement.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is brake disc skimming?
Brake disc skimming is a machining process that restores a worn or warped disc back to a flat, even surface. The key difference with on-car skimming is that the disc stays on the vehicle while it's machined, running perfectly true to the hub and drive flange it actually lives on. That's what kills the vibration and the noise for good, not just for a few weeks.
How much does brake disc skimming cost?
At Awesome GTI, brake disc skimming starts from £150 inc VAT for the pair. That covers the full job: wheels off, both discs skimmed on the car, everything back together.
Is brake disc skimming worth it compared to replacing the discs?
More often than not, yes. New discs alone won't fix the problem if the issue sits with the drive flange rather than the disc itself. Skimming on the car deals with the actual cause rather than masking it, and it costs less to boot. Not sure which route your car needs? Give us a call and we'll talk it through.
How long does brake disc skimming take?
Usually around two hours for both discs, including getting the wheels off and back on. It's the kind of job you can drop the car off for in the morning and have it back the same day.
