KW Variant 1, 2 and 3: Choosing Your Damping Control
KW offers five Variants alongside its Clubsport range, although Variants 1, 2 and 3 are the most common choices for the VAG applications we cover.
Variant 1 provides adjustable ride height with factory-set damping. It's a straightforward option for drivers who want to lower the car and improve its handling without adjusting the damper settings.
Variant 2 adds adjustable rebound damping. This controls how quickly the suspension extends again after being compressed, allowing the driver to fine-tune the car's handling and ride.
Variant 3 provides independently adjustable compression and rebound damping. It remains a road-focused coilover, but its extra adjustment makes it popular with track-day drivers using road tyres.
Variants 4 and 5 are designed for more specialist vehicles, including applications such as the Audi R8, as well as more focused race and track use. KW's Clubsport range is another option for cars built with regular circuit driving in mind.
KW DDC and Electronically Damped Coilovers
For cars fitted with electronic damper control from the factory, KW DDC Plug & Play coilovers are designed to integrate with the existing system. This allows the factory interior damping controls to remain functional after the coilovers have been fitted.
Lowering ranges vary between applications. On a Cupra Formentor, for example, the KW V3 kit lowers the front by 40 to 60mm and the rear by 40 to 65mm. Always check the individual product listing for the adjustment range available for a specific car.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between KW Variant 1, 2 and 3?
Variant 1 offers adjustable ride height with factory-set damping. Variant 2 adds adjustable rebound damping, while Variant 3 provides independently adjustable compression and rebound damping.
How many KW coilover Variants are there?
KW offers five Variants alongside its Clubsport range. Variants 1, 2 and 3 are the most common for VAG applications, while Variants 4 and 5 are intended for more specialist vehicles and focused race or track applications.
Are KW coilovers worth the money?
For drivers who want adjustable ride height and carefully developed damping, KW coilovers offer more control than fixed lowering springs. The right Variant depends on how much adjustment is needed and how the car will be used.
Can KW coilovers be used for track days?
Yes. Variant 3 remains road-focused but is popular with track-day drivers running road tyres. For cars built primarily for circuit use, the more specialist Variants and KW Clubsport range may be more suitable.
How low can KW coilovers go?
The available adjustment range varies by vehicle and kit. The KW V3 kit linked above for the Cupra Formentor lowers the front by 40 to 60mm and the rear by 40 to 65mm. Check the specific product listing before ordering.
