From Stock to 512ps Stage 3 : Our Cupra Formentor VZ3 Transformation

We recently added a 2023 Cupra Formentor VZ3 to our fleet, and as you might expect, it didn’t stay standard for very long.
Straight from the factory, the VZ3 is already an impressive performance SUV, producing 310bhp and 295 lb-ft of torque from its 2.0-litre EA888 EVO4 engine. However, at Awesome, we’re always looking for the next level of performance. Before long, our Graphene Grey Formentor had been transformed into a fully-fledged Stage 3 machine, proudly wearing RacingLine branding and delivering performance to match its aggressive looks.
RacingLine Stage 3 Software
The heart of this build is RacingLine’s Stage 3 software package, featuring both ECU (engine) and Racingline Dynamic TCU (gearbox) calibration.
Our Formentor played an important role in the development process, making the trip down to RacingLine headquarters where the team used the vehicle to develop and test their then-new TCU bootloader software. The result is a perfectly integrated engine and gearbox calibration package that unlocks the full potential of the EA888 EVO4 platform.
Combined with the supporting hardware upgrades, the Stage 3 software package delivers a dramatic increase in power and torque, completely transforming the driving experience.
Stage 3 Hardware Upgrades
With Stage 3 tuning, this Formentor is about as far from stock as it gets.
Garrett PowerMax 2 Turbocharger
At the core of the build is the Garrett PowerMax 2 turbocharger, working in harmony with RacingLine’s Stage 3 calibration. Designed as a direct-fit upgrade for the 2.0L TSI EA888 EVO4 engine, the PowerMax 2 offers significantly increased airflow and performance potential while retaining OEM-style fitment and reliability.

RacingLine R600 Intake System
To ensure the turbocharger receives all the airflow it needs, we installed the RacingLine R600 EA888 Gen 4 Intake and Inlet Hose.
This high-capacity intake system replaces the factory airbox with a twin-front intake design and a massive double-volume filter, capable of supporting up to 600hp. Not only does it improve airflow, but it also adds a more purposeful induction sound under load.

RacingLine MQB EVO Intercooler
Keeping intake temperatures under control is crucial on any high-performance turbocharged engine. That's where the RacingLine MQB EVO Intercooler comes in.
Featuring a high-efficiency core with extra-tall internal tubes for maximum boost flow, the intercooler offers a massive 96% increase in volume over the factory unit. The result is improved cooling performance, greater consistency, and enhanced reliability during spirited driving.

Racingline Catch-Can Kit
A further upgrade to our Cupra Formentor is the addition of a RacingLine Catch Can Kit, designed to help reduce oil vapour entering the intake system and keep the engine running cleaner over time. A popular modification for performance-focused EA888 engines, the kit offers a high-quality OEM+ fit and finish while helping to minimise carbon build-up on intake valves.

Racingline DSG Cooler
To further enhance the performance and reliability of our Formentor, we fitted the RacingLine DSG Cooler Kit. Designed to keep gearbox oil temperatures under control during spirited driving and track use, the kit helps maintain consistent shifting performance while reducing thermal stress on the transmission.

Racingline Stage 3 380mm Big Brake Kit
To match the Formentor's increased performance, we've upgraded the braking system with the RacingLine Stage 3 380mm Big Brake Kit. Featuring lightweight six-piston callipers paired with large 380mm two-piece floating discs, this premium setup delivers exceptional stopping power, improved pedal feel, and superior resistance to brake fade under demanding conditions. Whether on the road or the track, the kit provides the confidence and consistency needed to make the most of the Formentor's performance, while adding an aggressive OEM+ look behind the wheels.
Scorpion Performance Downpipe
To complete the package, we fitted a Scorpion Downpipe.
Manufactured from premium 80mm T304 stainless steel, the Scorpion system features a larger bore design that significantly improves exhaust gas flow. This reduction in restriction allows the turbocharger to operate more efficiently, helping the engine achieve its full Stage 3 performance potential.
Scorpion Performance GPF-Back
Engineered to deliver a deeper, sportier exhaust note while retaining compatibility with the factory GPF, the Scorpion GPF-Back system enhances the driving experience without compromising everyday usability.

Enhancing both the appearance and performance of our Cupra Formentor, we've fitted a set of RacingLine R360 20-inch alloy wheels. The Finished Result: From Capable SUV to Serious Performance Machine -
Before any modifications, our Cupra Formentor VZ3 was already an incredibly capable performance SUV. With 310bhp, 295 lb-ft of torque, four-wheel drive and a fast-shifting DSG gearbox, it delivered impressive acceleration, strong handling and a level of everyday usability that made it a great all-rounder.
It was quick, refined and practical — the kind of car that could comfortably handle the school run, a motorway cruise or a spirited blast down a favourite road.
However, after the Stage 3 transformation, the character of the Formentor has completely changed.
With the RacingLine Stage 3 ECU and TCU software, Garrett Powermax 2 turbocharger and supporting hardware upgrades, our Formentor is now producing in the region of 500bhp and 450 lb-ft of torque — a huge jump over the factory figures. The difference isn’t just noticeable on paper; it’s something you feel every time you put your foot down.
The power delivery is far more aggressive, with the upgraded turbo providing a stronger and more sustained surge of acceleration compared to the standard setup. The DSG gearbox calibration works perfectly alongside the increased power, delivering quicker shifts and making full use of the extra performance available. Where the standard car felt fast, the Stage 3 version feels genuinely rapid.
On the road, the Formentor now sits in a completely different performance category. It still retains the comfort, refinement and practicality that made it such a good daily driver, but it now has the ability to challenge cars wearing much more serious performance badges.
The combination of a compact SUV body, four-wheel drive traction and supercar-rivalling power figures creates a seriously entertaining package.
The biggest achievement with this build is that it hasn’t lost what made the Formentor great in the first place. It’s still comfortable, usable and easy to drive every day, but when the road opens up, it transforms into a completely different machine. This is no longer just a quick SUV — it’s a 512bhp performance car hiding underneath a practical Cupra body.
It's a perfect showcase of what's possible with the EA888 EVO4 platform—and proof that at Awesome, stock is only ever the starting point.
